Slate, beam of wood with an ax and video Photo Edouard FraipontIn the wee hours of the morning of March 31, 1964, a military coup arose against the Brazilian government legally constituted by João Goulart. Escola sem Partido considers this historic fact to approach the governmental coup perpetrated by the congresspeople – deputies and senators – involved in cases of corruption, in 2016.

The Song of the Forgotten Reverberates through the Edifice of Victory] (2016), the inaugural speech of former Brazilian President João Goulart, is played in a loop through a series of electrical cords that climb the wall in a geometric design. After finishing its path through the cords, going through a series of guitar effect pedals, the speech is projected into the space, through an amplifier, completely distorted. A set of earphones makes it possible to individually listen to the speech before the distortion.

Photo Edouard FraipontIn Safeword, Peters appears immobilized in the position of “macaw wood”, method of torture historically used in Brazil, mainly during the period of Military Regime. Simultaneously, on a TV monitor, a male voice dictates a humiliating, reactionary, and imperative text that orders the artist to repeat his words. This voice discusses the appropriation of language, as a fundamental weapon of social control. A mask with a microphone, which at the same time suffocates him, is attached to his face and linked to pedals that distort his voice. The process continues until the artist manages to break free.

My practice is based on the premise that, in order to generate form, it is necessary to expend energy. My performances, films, videos, objects and installations invariably make visible the efforts necessary for their realization – whether they are identified as a sound wave, electrical currents or my own breath. Each Work works as an attempt to build its own metabolism feeding on references that, historically, carry the engine of change, the horizon of frustration – such as modern attempts to revolutionize art – and life triggered by social agitators, by vanguard artists or by dictators committed to the rise and decline of peoples. These references are subjected to entropic cycles of repetition, loss and transformation of symbolic values or belief. In some cases, these metabolisms operate in a catabolic logic: they consume themselves, self-destruct through internal circuits, or present themselves as attempts at questionable effectiveness that inevitably fail. Others operate in an anabolic logic, producing a charge of energy that expends and disperses as movement, force, sound, sweat and friction. – Guilherme Peters, 2021
Guilherme Peters’ Works moves between drawing, video, performance and installation while investigating the relations between history, art, culture, politics, resistance, and transformation.
Co-produced with Roberto Winter, he wrote and directed the feature film “Proxy Reverso”, receiving several prizes, including Assembly and Invention, ABD Award, and Special Award of the Jury during the film festival Semana dos Diretores of 2015.
Peters has participated in exhibitions such as Artifice and Fiction at Institute of Contemporary Art of Singapore (2019, Singapore), XXXV International Festival of Uruguay, Cinemateca Uruguaya Lorenzo Carnelli (2017, Montevideo, Uruguay); Building Imaginery Bridges Across Hard Ground, Art Dubai Contemporary (2015, Dubai, United Arab Emirates); The part that doesn’t belong to you, Wiesbaden Kunsthaus (2014, Wisbaden, Germany); The History of the Winners Writing, Espacio OTR (2014, Madrid, Spain) ; Love and Hate Lygia Clark, Zacheta National Gallery (2013, Warsaw, Poland) “À Sombra do Futuro” at Instituto Cervantes (2010, São Paulo, Brazil), 8ª Bienal do MERCOSUL, “Ensaios de Geopoéticas” (2011, Porto Alegre, Brazil), “Panoramas do Sul”, 17° Festival Internacional de Arte Contemporânea Videobrasil, at SESC Belenzinho (2011, São Paulo, Brazil) and in several editions of the performance festival Verbo (São Paulo, Brazil).

A presente pesquisa busca analisar e compreender as potencialidades do fracasso a partir
das performances do artista Guilherme Peters. Examinando obras realizadas por ele entre os
anos de 2008 e 2016, sempre com o uso de skate, identificam-se ações recorrentes, como o
salto, a queda e a ruína gerada.
