The solo show Gabinete de Leitura by Flávia Ribeiro at Galeria Vermelho features a series of artworks created in paper, gouache, photography and silver leaf. Seeking to explore aspects such as the displacement of the observer in the exhibition space, proximity, and tactile contact with the artwork, Gabinete de Leitura includes artworks created in 2011 by Ribeiro, who studied metal engraving with Babinski and at the Slade School of Fine Arts, in London.
Mecânica [Mechanics] (2011), an artwork consisting of 69 sheets of white tracing paper hung on the wall, depends on the presence of the observer in close proximity with it: like pages of a book set loose in space, it reacts to the air displacement arising from the movement of the visitors, at different times and rhythms.
Mecânica is also the title of the artist’s book that Ribeiro is releasing at the exhibition’s opening. With a print run of ten unique, dated and signed copies, this work is a production of Edições Tijuana and Galeria Millan.
On two tables arranged in the exhibition space and lit with suspended lights, Ribeiro is also presenting 16 books that can be handled by the visitor. In some cases, they are books of traditional size, while others are oversized, such as Um pouco homem, um pouco coisa… [A Little Man, a Little Thing…], which measures nine meters.
