Vermelho presents, from September 13 to October 4, the group exhibition Image Non-Image, curated by Christine Mello.
The exhibition brings together works by Arlindo Machado, Bruno de Carvalho, Corpos Informáticos, feitoamãos/F.A.Q., Lucas Bambozzi, Luiz Duva, Neide Jallageas, NeoTao, Simone Michelin, and Spetto.
Image Non-Image gathers creators in the field of media art, producing works from videographic, digital, and telematic media, with reference to Arlindo Machado’s 1978 film “Complemento Nacional.” The curatorial idea is based on the observation of paths and ruptures in the contemporary scene that dialogue with techniques of appropriation and sampling of images and sounds, as well as the discussion of copyright, intersecting mediums such as video, computer, and the internet, based on experimental mechanisms of image production.
It is a curatorial game where Christine proposes to the artists to create a work based on Arlindo Machado’s work. She collects these works, edits them into a single tape, and redistributes them to the artists so that the final works are individual videos resulting from the group’s production. A shared situation of authorship, reprocessing, remixing, and unpredictability emerges.
- Bruno de Carvalho (Rio de Janeiro): An artist from the field of Communication and the courses of the School of Visual Arts at Parque Lage in Rio de Janeiro, associating video and video installation works presented in the traditional art circuit and alternative events in his production.
- Corpos Informáticos (Brasília): A group coordinated by Bia Medeiros since 1992 focusing on performance, video art, and the Internet. They have an extensive investigative work in video, video installation, video performance, net art, and teleperformance (performance on the Internet).
- feitoamãos/F.A.Q., (Belo Horizonte): A group of artists in the field of video art since the 80s, currently coming together in collective actions and live video, as a proposal for expanded cinema, seeking a closer relationship between music and image.
- Lucas Bambozzi (São Paulo): Active in the field of video art since the late 80s, with a vast range of exploratory works in video, video installation, CD-ROM, and net art. Recently dedicated to researching interactive devices in art and live video.
- Luiz Duva (São Paulo): Develops personal narratives in video, as well as a series of experiences with video installations. In recent years, he has been dedicated to VJing, combining audio and video for a new language dimension.
- Neide Jallageas (São Paulo): Explores alternative forms of photography and video production through performance, developing a consistent personal work in these areas over the past decade.
- NeoTao (São Paulo): A group of artists from various experimental tendencies (body art, performance, new media) united under the sign of collage.
- Simone Michelin (Rio de Janeiro): Has an experimental approach to video, video installation, video performance, CD-ROM, and net art, associating aesthetic practice with political practice in a single creative dimension of art.
- Spetto (São Paulo): Works with digital media since 1980, experimenting with software art, graphic animation, and live video. Seeks to dynamize through collage, recycling, and appropriation of various elements of mass media.
