Galeria Vermelho is a space dedicated to contemporary art. In addition to being a commercial gallery with 19 represented artists, Galeria Vermelho intends to support artistic research. Art theory courses and lectures will take place within the space and a library specialized in art and photography books is being organized on the gallery’s second floor.
Brazilian architect, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, turned three small houses of an old villa into a building for artistic interventions which has, as a very first of its kind in Brazil, a back-projection screen in its main exhibition room. Considering the increase of artistic research in alternative medias, Mendes da Rocha together with Galeria Vermelho aimed at developing a versatile exhibition space, both in- and outside, to meet these new demands. Paulo Mendes da Rocha is a renowned architect also responsible for the design of the Museu Brasileiro de Escultura in São Paulo, as well as the remodeling of the FIESP building and of the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, which received the Mis Van der Rohe – Latin America 2001 award.
The represented artists will be separated in two teams for the inaugural exhibition. The first show, from May 17 to June 22, will gather pieces of artists who work with photography and video: Rafael Assef, Cris Bierrenbach, Eliana Bordin, Rogério Canella, Domitilia Coelho, Paulo D’Alessandro, Edouard Fraipont, Cristina Guerra, Claudia Jaguaribe, Odires Mlászho, Eustáquio Neves, Amilcar Packer, Alexandra Pescuma, Paula Trope, Cassio Vasconcellos and Marcelo Zocchio. This exhibition defines the gallery’s intention to work primarily with photography, considering it to be a major form of expression in contemporary art.
For the second show, that will take place in June, a selection of young artists whose work explores a variety of medias was made. The pieces will be developed during the exhibition period, turning the gallery into a group workshop. Visitors will be welcome to witness the artistic processes and happenings. Brazilian artist and teacher at FAAP College Dora Longo Bahia organizes this project.
