When I invited the curators, it was less as a friend of Leonilson’s than as a teacher. I thought about not just creating a tribute but an exhibition that would reflect on the legacy the artist left. Since art is only alive when it disseminates, circulates, and is seen by others, an exhibition with young artists who contemplate his work is of great importance. In this way, we understand not only his body of work but also its reception in the next generation. The exhibition would only be complete if the curators were not from the same generation as Leonilson. The intention was to avoid a view tainted by personal ties to the artist and encourage a fresh perspective on his work. This way, we can keep his legacy alive.
