Through art, Vermelho positions itself as a space for dialogue, provocations, and reflections. Always with the artists’ proposals as protagonists, the gallery’s mission is to activate creative production and establish collaborations between artists, collectors, institutions, other galleries, and the public.
Founded in São Paulo in 2002, Vermelho represents different generations of contemporary Latin American artists currently active. Its main focus is on post-conceptualist production and the articulation between various forms of artistic expression, such as performance, dance, cinema, music, fashion, and literature.
Vermelho has an extensive history of collaborations with public and private institutions open to the public. Since its inauguration, the gallery as positioned works by over 40 artists in 234 public and private institutions in 28 countries across all continents.
Vermelho’s interdisciplinary vocation has driven the creation of spaces suitable for the different languages of artistic expression.
Since 2005, Vermelho has annually produced Verbo, a Performance Art Festival that promotes, publicizes, and publishes actions by Brazilian and foreign artists. In its nearly 20 years of history, Verbo has hosted around 500 actions by more than 600 artists from 20 countries. Verbo has also become a hub for institutional connections, establishing 100 cultural partnerships throughout its history. Currently, Verbo takes place annually in three different institutions across Brazil: at Vermelho in São Paulo, at Chão SLZ in São Luiz do Maranhão, and at the Pinacoteca do Ceará in Fortaleza. These are three different institutional instances that come together to organize the Show: a commercial gallery, an independent space, and a public museum.
In 2007, Vermelho inaugurated Tijuana, a publishing house and exhibition platform focused on printed art, particularly artist books. Today, Tijuana also acts as a traveling fair for printed art that has organized more than 20 editions in seven different countries.
In 2016, Vermelho inaugurated Sala Antonio, its cinema-style screening room. The space was created to showcase the production of artists working at the intersection of visual arts and cinema. Sala Antonio has become a multipurpose space, hosting launches, festivals, lectures, and film clubs. In these various spheres, Sala Antonio has screened around 300 films, including public and private collections from international institutions.

Vermelho was inaugurated on May 17, 2002, by Eduardo Brandão and Eliana Finkelstein. Its headquarters was designed by Pritzker Prize winner Paulo Mendes da Rocha (1928-2021), in collaboration with the architecture firm Piratininga, led by José Armênio de Brito Cruz. Its space, developed from the rearticulation of a complex of 5 houses, includes 4 exhibition rooms, an outdoor plaza, and a 120-square-meter facade that has presented more than 100 projects. Vermelho has hosted film festivals, fashion shows, concerts, and food fairs. In 2024, Eliana Finkelstein left the gallery’s partnership and Eduardo Brandão continues to lead Vermelho.
