In the Aérea [Aerial] exhibition, Edilaine Cunha presents a series of new works, which include drawings, sculptures, photography and installations, all addressing issues associated with the element of air.
In “Para quebrar o silêncio” (2005), a screen print on a white plastic bag, the artist invites the public to break the silence in spaces dedicated to art by exploding one of the traditional supermarket bags. “Preenchendo vazios” (2005), an installation that will occupy the lower floor of the gallery, Cunha uses a Sealed-Air machine to produce air pockets that, at the end of the exhibition, will reach more than one meter in height inside the white cube.
On the first floor of the gallery, the sculpture “Contém/ Está contido” (2005) points to hidden layers beneath the finished work, an idea that returns in the drawings “Plano para voar” and “Elevador”, (2005), in which the artist reveals , through plans, the lines of a traditional paper plane folding or an elevator drawing.
In the diptych “Levitar” (2005), Cunha appears in pajamas in two photos levitating in his room, while small fans sensitive to human presence and embedded in the gallery walls provide a light and constant breeze in “Suave deslocamento do ar” (2005) . “Popstars” (2003), inkjet print on paper, from 2003, Cunha displays a set of 5 pieces from a series of appropriations of errors that occurred during the transmission of photos via the internet. The artist titled each of the pieces with the name of the person portrayed, hidden by error, in this case, Madonna, Courtney Love, Lauren Hill, Alanis Morrissette, and Sporty Spice. In “Palco portátil” (2005), a wooden structure measuring approximately 40 x 40 cm, which when disassembled resembles a briefcase, supports the weight of a standing person, transforming into a small platform for jumping or landing. In the series “Separadores”, (2005), three-dimensional structures in glass and metal separate bodies in different positions, and can be moved by the public on the upper floor of the gallery.
In addition to these works, the artist also prepared a special drink for the performance “Bonito por Dentro”. The drink will be served on the opening day.
