Vermelho presents, from May 30th to June 24th, 2006, the solo exhibition O.D.I.R.E.S. – Objetos Derivados, Intrínsecos aos Restos Emulsionados ou Saqueados.
O.D.I.R.E.S. – Objetos Derivados, Intrínsecos aos Restos Emulsionados ou Saqueados, Odires Mlászho presents a whole new series of unpublished works. On the ground floor of the gallery, the series “Mestres Açougueiros e Aprendizes” will be exhibited, made up of four large-format images, created from fragments of photographs of human skin taken from male and female nude magazines. Such fragments compose, through the collage technique, bodies without faces, pointing to the absence of identity represented by the propagation, by the aesthetics industry, of perfect bodies. “Mestres Açougueiros e Aprendizes” is directly related to the series of collages that will be presented in the same space called “Flaps”.
In this series, the artist appropriates old industrial catalogs and anatomy manuals, superimposing them through paper cuts, transforming the supposedly descriptive text of these books into indecipherable landscapes. Mlászho’s interest in old books and encyclopedias reappears in the series “Livros objetos”, in which the artist removes the finish from the covers of books in search of the paper that serves as their structure and, from there, reframes such objects by joining together several fascicles creating sculptures of these objects, currently completely disused. “Minha sobremesa preferida”, a series of four photographs, highlights the marks left by moths in these great encyclopedias and “Do Inferno e Lugares Próximos” reveals in two large photographic enlargements the zinc clichés used as a matrix in book illustrations. In addition, Mlászho also presents the series of manually excavated photos “Portas externas”, and “Teddy Bear”, an installation composed of four stuffed bears, created from old fur coats, acquired in thrift stores and which reveal much of the process developed by the artist in his creations.
