Comunidade [e o outro processo] - Cinthia Marcelle e Tiago Mata Machado

DE 06/06/2017 - 01/07/2017 A

Cinthia Marcelle and Tiago Mata Machado propose a speculation on order and chaos, containment and dispersion, individual and collective, submission and rebellion, here and there. In this game of opposition, the project is composed by two videos: a film and an animation – figuration and abstraction. The video and the animation consist of multiple takes in two situations: the concentration of people and scratch marks in a line and the scattering of the people and scratch marks when there is turmoil. Between one take and another, a black screen is inserted and the sound of drumming is intensified according to the level of agitation. Community is presented as a “fractured” image of the Brazilian social contract, always ready to break apart, stable in its instability. A delicate balance, on the verge chaos.

Comunidade establishes, together with two previous films by Cinthia Marcelle and Tiago Mata Machado – O Século [The Century] (2011) and Rua de Mão Única [One way street] (2013) – a set of works about the conflicts of life in large urban centers.

The more recent partnership between Marcelle and Mata Machado can be currently seen in the video NAU/ NOW, which is part of the installation Chão de caça [Hunting Ground], by Cinthia Marcelle, now being shown in the Brazilian pavilion at the 57th Venice Biennale.

Comunidade is a coproduction of the Centre d’Art Contemporain Genève for the Biennale de l’Image en Mouvement 2016, with support from the Fonds d’Art Contemporain (FMAC) and the Fonds d’Art Contemporain (FCAC) (both of Geneva), from Faena Art, from In Between Art Film and from the Geneva School of Art and Design (HEAD).
